While we never explicitly told our child there was no Santa, we also didn't act as if Santa were real. We read the Christmas stories that include Santa, watched Rudolph, and presents under our tree all came from Mom and Dad.

Nevertheless, it was quite funny one year when our child was about three. They looked quizzically at our glass-fronted gas fireplace and asked how Santa was going to get out of the fireplace to put the presents under the tree.

My answer: "It's magic."
